Governance   »   People   »   Business Roles

The business roles involve the business or executive sponsor, business representatives and others involved in the project for the purposes of demonstration, assessment, quality and business advice. Although a specific individual is not mandated someone prepared to take up the responsibility for the business team as the business team leader is required.

The UK based DSDM Consortium has a series of project business roles including business sponsor, business visionary, business ambassador, business advisor etc and is exacting in the naming, description, responsibilities and hand-offs. The syntax of the role or peculiarity of the role title is not as important in the Toolkit and, in our experience delivering commercial projects, the project is best left to sustain its current job titles and to define and assign its own business responsibilities. The DSDM business role list is though a very useful checklist to make sure you have the various responsibilities covered. But we would warn against using the specific titles unless the DSDM roles are well established in the organisation.

It is the responsibility of the business to define acceptance criteria for each release. Quality assessments and various demonstrations across the project to business teams will invariably sort the responsibilities and the gaps very swiftly indeed. The project sponsor is the owner of the responsibility, that is all that the Toolkit makes mandatory and all you need.

However you and the project sponsor decide to split the responsibilities these will include Ownership, definition and communication of alignment to strategy and business vision, the business rules, documentation and training, collaboration between business stakeholders, business change, project funding and business resources, business stakeholder and account management, business escalation and conflict management, business project sponsorship, the final arbiter of requirements, deliverable assessments and elaboration of user stories.

The project sponsor is the owner of the key R&R Engagement Commitment and will deliver a responsibility matrix to demonstrate that specific people will cover each of the responsibilities demanded.
